元和元年(1615年)に起こった大坂夏の陣、特に５月７日の決戦を描いた屏風です。
夏の陣に参戦した東軍の黒田長政が戦勝記念に描かせたもので、黒田家に伝来しました。
城南の決戦の火蓋が切られた直後の様子を克明に描いた右隻と、敗残兵や戦火から逃れる人々の様子を極めてリアルに描いた左隻となっています。
雄大なスケールと細密な描写で見事に描き上げた優れた作品です。

This folding screen depicts the summer battle of Osaka in 1615, especially the decisive battle on May 7.
Nagamasa Kuroda, a member of the Eastern Army who participated in the Summer Campaign, ordered a painter to paint this screen to commemorate his victory in the battle, and it was handed down to the Kuroda family.
The right screen clearly depicts the scene immediately after the decisive battle at Jonan, and the left screen depicts extremely realistic scenes of the defeated soldiers and people fleeing from the fire.
This is an excellent work of art with a magnificent scale and detailed depiction.
